The Arcadia neighborhood in east Phoenix has seen a slew of new restaurants and bars open within the past few years, growing into a popular destination and submarket.

The neighborhood will soon be graced with a few fun diverse venues from one spectrum to another; a bar tucked into a strip mall that is full of surprises to a new culinary concept from longtime Arizona restaurateur Sam Fox.

Doughbird Pizza & Rotisserie

4385 East Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018

We announced Sam Fox’s new restaurant Doughbird Pizza & Rotisserie late last year but we are happy to say that the restaurant will open March 28 on 44th Street and Indian School Road in the Arcadia Gateway Shopping Center in a 5,500-square-foot space.

The culinary focus will be carb-heavy — unlike other Fox Restaurant Concepts such as True Food or Flower Child — and will feature unique signature fresh-baked pizzas, hand-rubbed, organic rotisserie meats, sandwiches, salads and fresh bread.

This is an eventful month for Fox. Just last week, the James Beard Foundation announced he was nominated for Outstanding Restaurateur for the 10th year in a row. Doughbird is his 16th restaurant brand — his first since launching Flower Child in 2014.

The Bar

3174 East Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018

602-957-3686

A Midwestern native, now Phoenix lawyer has opened a new bar in the Arcadia-Biltmore area.  Michael Withey, partner at Withey Morris PLC, which focuses on zoning cases and development projects, has opened “The Bar” at the northwest corner of 32 nd Street and Indian School Road.

When you think of the venue, think small town corner bar where everyone knows you and the bartender already knows what you drink and how you like your drink made.  Whithey says, “There are lots of chains, and I wanted this to be different — not corporate.”

“The Bar” is tucked into a nondescript shopping strip and has partnered with nearby restaurant The Stand to serve its food. The restaurant has the look and feel of an old-school laundromat that turns out best-selling ironed ground beef sliders along with pressed sandwiches and folded pork quesadillas as well as crispy boneless wings and several other menu items.

Whining Pig

3730 East Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018

602-795-9910

The Whining Pig takes over Arcadia’s Pig’s Meow—say that fast three times!  This will be the Whining Pig’s third location and they will soon have a fourth.

After some minor renovations the location is open and offers a cozy sports vibe with a good selection of wine and craft beers.  Co-owner Daniel Caprario said the beer and wine menu will be expanded.
