- 56th St. Improvement Project
The drive down 56th St. in Arcadia is a pretty one with views of Camelback Mountain views and beautiful homes. Now, the city is going to make this Arcadia street just as enjoyable for pedestrians and bicyclists. The 1.5 mile stretch along 56th St. from Camelback to Thomas will get a makeover. The build out includes includes new 12 foot wide multi use paths, raised medians and intersections and more street lighting. The areas along Veritas Prep and near Lafayette and Exeter will also get landscape buffers separate the street from the new path for added safety. Full design is still in the planning stages, but construction on he project is starting in 2025. The first phase will extend North of Indian School to Camelback, and the second from Indian School to Thomas Road. This is just another way Arcadia is leaning into the urban lifestyle and I think every resident is here for it.
- Scottsdale's Nocturnal Delight: Where Ambiance Meets Appetite
Indulging in a mid-week pizza craving is practically a ritual for my husband and me. This time around, we decided to break away from our usual spots and embark on a culinary adventure at Night Owl in south Scottsdale. Brought to you by the masterminds behind the Arcadia dive bar, Little Woody, Genuine Concepts has graced south Scottsdale with the captivating Night Owl. The name itself pays homage to an owl logo that adorned the walls of The Little Woody building – a gem worth exploring if you haven't already. Stepping inside, we were greeted by a mesmerizing blend of vintage skateboards adorning the walls and lively arcade games, setting the stage for a unique dining experience. However, the pièce de résistance for me was the expansive patio – a haven of comfort with ample seating, cornhole games, and strategically placed TVs, ensuring endless entertainment. The menu, an eclectic mix of libations, caught our attention with a tempting array of cocktail options. Though we were in the midst of a workday, we opted for a more modest selection, settling on classic beer-battered French fries, wings, and the Pineapple Express pizza – a delectable twist on the traditional Hawaiian, adding a spicy kick to the mix. Night Owl boasts 18-inch pizzas, with a gluten-free option available for those with dietary preferences. The culinary delights don't stop there; the establishment generously offers specials, such as a $10 lunch combo and a tantalizing pizza-and-bottle-of-wine deal for $35, exclusive to Mondays and Tuesdays. Additionally, savvy patrons can partake in their rewards program, reaping $5 for every $100 spent – a delightful bonus for frequent visitors. With its dynamic ambiance, both indoors and outdoors, and an array of mouthwatering dishes (with the pizza stealing the spotlight), Night Owl seamlessly weaves itself into the fabric of Scottsdale's culinary scene. A splendid addition, indeed! For more information and to see their menu, go to nightowlaz.com.
- The Perfect Friday Night : The Vig Arcadia
As a mom juggling the responsibilities of raising a family and navigating work life, Friday nights are a sacred time for my family and me. One of our favorite haunts in the vibrant Arcadia Lite neighborhood is none other than The Vig – a place that has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of our community. The grass area on the patio at The Vig serves as a magnetic force that draws families like ours. It's a haven for the kids, providing a space where they can run around, release their pent-up energy, and make lasting memories with their friends. Meanwhile, us adults get to savor the delightful combination of good food, fine wine, and the company of our neighbors. Speaking of good food, The Vig has undoubtedly cracked the code when it comes to pleasing both discerning parents and their little ones. The mac and cheese, a perennial favorite, is a dish that has received the stamp of approval from both generations. The crispy sweet potato and regular fries are my daughter's Lola, go-to. For me, the brussel sprout salad or shrimp tacos are the epitome of culinary delight. The menu's versatility ensures that everyone in the family, from my husband Joey with his penchant for the mac and cheese topped with succulent pork, to my son Grey who can't get enough of it, finds their perfect match. Friday nights at The Vig offer more than just a gastronomic journey – they are a sensory feast. The live music on the patio creates an ambiance that is simply unmatched. With strategically placed heaters and misters, the patio is a year-round haven for those seeking to enjoy the cool Arizona evenings. The menu, a symphony of flavors, is constantly evolving, keeping us excited to return and discover what culinary delights await us. The icing on the cake is the happy hour from 4-6, a golden window where great drinks and snacks come together to elevate our experience. The Vig Arcadia is not just a restaurant; it's a communal space, a hub where friends and neighbors come together to unwind and connect. For those seeking a more intimate setting, the inside of The Vig is equally enticing. The full bar, complete with ample seating, sets the stage for a perfect date night. The attentive staff ensures that whether you're outside, enjoying the liveliness of the patio, or inside, reveling in a more intimate setting, your experience is nothing short of exceptional. The Vig Arcadia has become our haven – a place where we can slow down, savor the flavors of life, and build lasting connections with our community. If you haven't made The Vig a part of your Friday night routine (or any night for that matter), it's time to discover the magic that unfolds when great food, live music, and warm company come together in the heart of Arcadia Lite.

- Steph's Spotlight: It's Hiking Season and Arcadia Has Some of the Best Hiking Adventures in Phoenix
When the weather breaks there are fewer things I enjoy more than hitting our local hiking trails. The Arcadia area is surrounded by fantastic hiking opportunities amidst stunning desert landscapes. Here are some of my favorite trails in the area: Camelback Mountain: Echo Canyon Trail Camelback Mountain is an iconic Phoenix landmark offering two challenging trails, with Echo Canyon being the more strenuous one. The trail spans 1.23 miles and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the cityscape from the summit. Papago Park: Hole-in-the-Rock Trail Located near the Phoenix Zoo, this short but rewarding trail leads to a natural sandstone formation with a "hole in the rock" offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. It's an easy hike suitable for families. Piestewa Peak: Summit Trail Piestewa Peak, formerly known as Squaw Peak, boasts the Summit Trail, a popular and demanding route offering a challenging workout and stunning vistas of the city. This trail is about 2.2 miles long and is known for its steep incline. Phoenix Mountains Preserve: Piestewa Peak Circumference Trail For a less crowded alternative, the Circumference Trail around Piestewa Peak offers a 3.9-mile loop with moderate difficulty. It provides excellent views of the desert landscape and the city. Cholla Trail at Camelback Mountain The Cholla Trail on Camelback Mountain offers a slightly less strenuous hike compared to Echo Canyon. It's about 1.5 miles long and provides stunning views of the city and the surrounding desert. When hiking in these areas: Stay Hydrated: Arizona's desert climate demands ample water, especially during hotter months. Proper Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes suitable for rocky terrain. Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and consider early morning or late afternoon hikes to avoid intense heat. Always check for trail closures or restrictions, especially during summer months when some trails might be closed due to extreme temperatures or maintenance. And remember to respect the desert environment by leaving no trace and following trail etiquette. Whether you're an avid hiker seeking a challenge or a casual explorer looking for breathtaking views, the hiking trails around Arcadia promise the best Phoenix Desert Hiking Adventures amongst stunning scenery.

- PYRO Restaurant vs. The Vegetarian: An Arcadia Culinary Adventure
Introduction: Dive into our latest dining experience at PYRO restaurant, a new gem in the Arcadia, Phoenix dining scene, where the challenge was introducing my vegetarian wife to a world of vibrant flavors. This isn’t just any restaurant; it’s where I discovered the "WORLD'S BEST BRANZINO," and my wife found new vegetarian delights. Arcadia's Eclectic Dining: In Arcadia, a neighborhood brimming with culinary treasures, finding a standout restaurant is a delightful challenge. PYRO, with its recent opening, was our latest conquest. Getting a table in its first week was a stroke of luck, a testament to the ever-evolving and exciting Arcadia restaurant landscape. The Menu Magic: The menu at PYRO is a culinary canvas, offering something for every palate. While my wife cautiously navigated the vegetarian options, I seized the opportunity to indulge in what the menu proudly proclaimed as the "WORLD'S BEST BRANZINO." Let me tell you, it lived up to its name! Alongside, I enjoyed a beet salad and a glass of sake, a perfect pairing when available and fitting with the meal. The Vegetarian's Leap of Faith: Envision the task of gently persuading a cat to enter a bathtub – that's quite similar to my efforts in encouraging my wife to explore new dishes at a restaurant. With a perfect blend of enthusiasm and perceptiveness, our waiter gently guided her to try the beet salad and Curry Spinach, perfectly paired with a crisp New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Despite her initial reservations, she found herself delightfully surprised by the rich flavors that each dish revealed. Ambiance and Awe: PYRO offers more than just a culinary journey; it's a full-fledged sensory experience. The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between elegance and essence, extending even to the restroom's audio selection. Streaming the audiobook of "The Art of War" through the toilet closets is both unconventional and incredibly cool, encapsulating the distinct essence that is uniquely PYRO. Looking Forward: As for me, the culinary explorer, I left PYRO with a wishlist. Had I had the chance, I would have happily sampled five or six more dishes from their enticing menu. The promise of future visits to delve deeper into PYRO's culinary offerings lingers in my mind, an exciting prospect for any food enthusiast. Conclusion: Our evening at PYRO turned into a delightful exploration of Arcadia's culinary landscape. Offering everything from the acclaimed "WORLD'S BEST BRANZINO" to vegetarian-friendly options, it's a treasure trove of flavors. I'd recommend dining here with friends, as the family-style approach is encouraged, allowing you to sample a broader array of dishes. This makes PYRO a must-visit spot in Phoenix, especially in Arcadia, ready to astonish and please even the most varied of dining groups, and not just from the perspective of a husband with a vegetarian wife.

- WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH: The Red River Gum (Eucalyptus) Trees On Arcadia Dr.?
Trees? What trees? The Red River Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is a species of eucalyptus tree native to Australia. The bark of the Red River Gum is typically smooth and white or pale gray, but it can become rough and flaky with age. The leaves are lance-shaped and usually dark green or bluish-gray. They emit a pleasant eucalyptus scent. Additionally, the Red River Gum is commonly found along riverbanks, floodplains, and other water bodies. It requires a significant amount of water to thrive and is well-adapted to wetter environments. It is here, in the Arcadia Neighborhood, alongside of the irrigation ditch that runs south of Lafayette on Arcadia Dr. that you will find 27 Giant Eucalyptus trees. They are each around 100 feet tall! Oh! Yes...Those Trees. I love those trees. What about them? Dr. Herbert Johnson “Tim” Louis was just a boy when he planted the red river gum eucalyptus trees. This was in the 1940's when the original 24 acres surrounding the property were used for cultivating citrus. That means the trees are about 80 years old!! They are a beautiful gateway into the neighborhood in my opinion. Often this kind of tree is planted as a wind break, erosion control, or even mosquito repellent. When asked why he decided to plant the trees alongside the irrigation ditch, his answer was, 'because his mother told him to'. Thank you Mrs. Louis! Now, as with any living thing, maintaining an old Red River Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) tree requires thoughtful care to support its health and longevity. Older trees have specific needs and considerations. Here are some important tips for maintaining an old Red River Gum tree: Regular Inspection: Conduct frequent visual inspections for signs of stress, disease, or damage. Look for cracked or peeling bark, dead branches, and any unusual growth patterns. Pruning: Focus on removing dead or diseased branches. Older trees may not require extensive pruning, but selective removal of problematic branches can improve overall health. Maintain Structural Integrity: Address any structural issues, such as split or weak branches, to prevent potential hazards. Monitor for Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for signs of insect infestations or diseases. Early detection and appropriate treatment can prevent further damage. Avoid Major Root Disturbance: Be cautious with any construction or excavation near the tree, as disturbing its roots can be detrimental to its health. HOWEVER, only 11 of the 27 trees can be cared for. What?! Why? Well, with likely good intentions, in 2002, the City of Phoenix placed 2,870 LF of the historic Burgess Lateral (aka irrigation ditch running along Lafayette and Arcadia Dr.) on the National Register of Historical Places. SRP pointed out that the eucalyptus trees are "integral to the ditch and therefore they are historical". What this means is that with the "historical designation", SRP can't touch the trees; City of Phoenix claims that it's the homeowners responsibility to maintain property within 25 feet of their property line (huh?); and the HOA for the (adjacent) homes -Arcadia Estates, doesn't believe that they should pay extra for tree maintenance on trees that are simply not on their property. (Ironically, the 11 trees that DO get cared for are being maintained by the Arcadia Estates HOA.) Historical or Hysterical?. Well, if a branch falls, (and they do), depending on where it falls will depend on who is responsible for to cleaning it up. falls into the road = City of Phoenix. falls into water ditch = SRP falls onto sidewalk = Arcadia Estates HOA falls into a homeowners lot = resident any eucalyptus leaves that blow over to O.H.S.O. get mixed into a craft beer. (ONLY KIDDING) A problem that no one can solve is how to PREVENT dangerous dead branches from falling in the first place, or allowing an expert to care for and nurture the trees that are designated as essentially "untouchable". Arcadia's Historic Red River Gums have care needs that challenge neighbors, corporations, and even the government...simultaneously. It's really the strangest story of all. The Arcadia neighborhood is full of like-minded, neighborly, charitable people who will take responsibility for problems that are not theirs or assist other neighbors if they can use some help. I've seen neighbors with trash bags, tackling the unkempt area when it gets bad --yes...EVEN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DITCH! (gasp). When you see this, consider giving a helping hand. Also, just thinking out loud, but maybe reconsider your route during a monsoon storm. I'm a busy Realtor, Mom and many other things. I'm not currently in a position to coordinate this level of change. But, I'm happy to share the story, as it is part of our history, our present, and our neighborhood. Reach out if you have comments or questions, I can direct you to our neighborhood resources regarding this matter. I know of a group that is currently working on this issue and they would welcome the additional minds and efforts. Thanks for reading.
