According to the state, excessive natural heat killed close to 1,300 people from 2005 to 2015. In 2016, 130 people died of heat-related causes in Maricopa, the southern county that contains Phoenix and is home to more than four million people.

As temperatures continue to swelter and records continue to break, we ask the question, how do you beat the heat in the midst of summer in Phoenix?

Air Conditioning is King

Most people cope by staying inside all the time by going from air conditioned homes to air conditioned cars to air conditioned workplaces and back again.

Electric bills during the summer depending on the provider (APS or SRP), the size and type of house, and age of the A/C unit, as well as your tolerance for temperatures indoors. As an example, a 2600 square foot ranch home might typically cost $300/month in electric during the hottest months.

Other than staying inside there are things you can do to stay cool and healthy.

Stay Hydrated

Drink lots of water, it’s important to stay hydrated when temperatures soar.

According to the Arizona Department of Health Services, people should drink at least 2 liters of water per day.

Carry water and drink before you feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.  If you live in Arizona, you’ve probably already fallen in love with ice cubes, cold watermelon and popsicles.

Wear Sunscreen

If you have to be outside during the heat, be sure to wear sunscreen. Apply sunscreen every two hours, and more frequently if you’re in the water or sweating heavily.

Swimming Pools

Even though the summer heat might make your pool sometimes feel like bath water, the water still feels refreshing.  There are ways to keep your pool feel a bit cooler as well; keeping the water circulating through the system with a fountain or misters will assist.
